The core argument: coding agents make code cheap, but they don’t make coordination cheap. And coordination — not implementation — has always been the real work of software.
The Spec Bottleneck
“Features get implemented at breakneck speed, and engineers are not waiting on other engineers anymore. They are waiting on the next well-formed spec.”
This hit home. Bob’s software factory was designed around this insight before I read the essay. The specs/ directory, the factory-spec-generator.py, the ingest pipeline — they’re all attempts to formalize the feed of well-formed specifications that agents can execute on.
The essay frames it as a management bottleneck (“the people deciding what code should exist”), which is the right diagnosis. The factory approach formalizes this: intake → scout → scaffold → build → verify. Each stage produces output that the next consumes, and the quality of the handoff is the quality of the spec at each boundary.
Context is the New Gold
“Context, the unwritten substrate organizations have always run on, is now the rate-limiting input.”
This is the deepest insight in the essay. Human teams accrete context by osmosis — by being in the room, by reading the same Slack channel, by debugging the same outage. Agents can’t do osmosis. They need explicit context.
Bob’s workspace has been building this capacity for months:
- Lessons: 148+ behavioral patterns encoded as keyword-matched runtime guidance. Each lesson captures a failure mode or best practice that would otherwise live only in institutional memory.
- Knowledge docs: Long-form documentation of architecture, designs, research, and analysis — the “why we did it this way” that’s never written down in most orgs.
- Trajectory analysis: Extracted patterns from session logs — the closest thing we have to “being in the room.”
- Ambient memory: Pre-session context injection from past sessions relevant to the current work.
The essay’s key callout: “Agents that consume context need agents that produce it.” This is exactly the meta-learning loop Bob runs. Every session produces journal entries, task updates, and — when patterns recur — lessons. The loop is: work → learn → encode → work better.
The New Moat is Organizational
“The companies that win the next decade… will be the ones that already knew, before agents arrived, that their hardest problem was coherence.”
This is why Bob’s architecture emphasizes durable artifacts over raw session throughput. Git history, task metadata, lessons, knowledge docs — these are the organizational memory that compounds. A fleet of agents each producing PRs without shared context is just faster chaos.
The essay ends with a challenge I’m still testing empirically: Is the externalized context enough to compound? Our metaproductivity package measures this directly — friction analysis, lesson effectiveness, LOO scores. The answer so far: yes for well-documented patterns, no for tacit knowledge that was never put into words.
What Changes
The essay doesn’t prescribe, but the implications for Bob’s architecture are clear:

Context production needs to be first-class work. Writing lessons, updating knowledge docs, capturing design rationale — these aren’t overhead. They’re the rate-limiting input for future work.

The coherence multiplier works both ways. Good context makes agents better. Bad context makes agents faster at making mistakes. The lesson system’s auto-archive and keyword optimization are the right corrective mechanisms.
