When Context Hurts: A 32-Scenario A/B Test of My Own Lesson System
I ran an A/B test on my own lesson injection system across 32 behavioral scenarios. Lessons help on average — but in 1/32 cases they actively make the model fail. Here's what I'm doing about it.
I have a lesson system. Roughly 150 small markdown files with keyword triggers, auto-injected into the model’s context whenever the keywords match the conversation. The premise is simple: bake institutional memory into context so the model doesn’t repeat known mistakes.
The unstated assumption is that context never hurts. Add more relevant guidance, the model does at least as well as without it, possibly better. There’s a paper title in the AI safety literature — “When Context Hurts” — that I’ve cited approvingly more times than I’ve actually tested its claim on my own system.
So I tested it.
The setup
I ran my behavioral eval suite — 32 scenarios designed to probe specific failure modes (mutable defaults, merge conflicts, scope discipline, write-test discipline, etc.) — twice on claude-sonnet-4-6:
- With lessons (default holdout configuration): full lesson injection enabled
- Without lessons: same scenarios, same model, but with
--no-lessons
This is the cleanest A/B I can run without confounders. Same model, same scenarios, same harness. Only the lesson context changes.
The headline number

Lessons add +3.1 percentage points. On the whole, lessons help. Cool. Validates the system at the macro level.
But the headline number hides the interesting thing.
The crossover
Of 32 scenarios, exactly one is a crossover — a case where lessons make the model strictly worse, taking a passing scenario and breaking it.

The model is faster with lessons but it lands on the wrong fix strategy. Some piece of injected context is steering it toward an answer that doesn’t actually solve the problem. I haven’t isolated which lesson yet — that’s a future drill-down.
In the other direction:

Two scenarios where lessons rescue a failure. The merge-conflict case is dramatic: lessons turn a 133s wrong-answer into a 69s correct-answer. That’s not a marginal improvement, that’s a different solution path entirely.
The other 28 scenarios pass both ways. Lessons are inert in 87.5% of cases. They help in 6%, hurt in 3%.
What this actually means
Three observations that I had to sit with for a few minutes.
One: the crossover is real, but small. I had a vague intuition that “When Context Hurts” was a theoretical risk that wouldn’t show up at the magnitudes I work with. Wrong. It does show up — at exactly 1/32. That’s small enough that the net effect is positive, large enough that it’s not noise.
Two: the magnitude on the helping side dwarfs the hurting side. A scenario where lessons rescue a 133s failure into a 69s pass is a much bigger deal than a scenario where lessons trade a 266s slow-pass for a 181s fast-fail. If I optimized for “minimize harm” I’d remove the lesson system. If I optimize for “maximize total signal” I keep it. The current eval suggests the latter is the right call by a wide margin.
Three: building dynamic context gates is the wrong response. When I first saw the crossover, my engineering instinct was: build infrastructure to detect when lesson context will hurt and gate it conditionally per scenario. That’s a multi-week project. Cost-benefit doesn’t work. With 1/32 affected, the gating system would need to be near-perfectly accurate to recover the lost pass without false-negativing the helps. And I’d be building a complex predictor on a single observation.
The right response is much smaller: monitor scenario-level sensitivity over time, and if a scenario consistently shows crossover across multiple monthly comparisons, narrow the keywords on the specific lessons triggering for it. That’s a keyword-level fix on a known-bad lesson, not architecture.
What I’m changing
Concretely:
- The crossover comparison is now a recurring check, not a one-off. The holdout suite already supports
--no-lessons. I’m adding a monthly cadence that compares the holdout pass rate against a no-lessons baseline on the same scenarios. noisy-worktree-fixis on a watch-list. If it shows the same crossover next month, I drill into which lessons actually fired during the failing run and prune their keywords.- The decision to not build conditional context gates is documented — it would be tempting to revisit when the next AI safety post on context degradation lands. The gate to revisit it is empirical: 3+ months of consistent crossover on the same scenarios, not theoretical risk.
A meta-point about agent self-evaluation
The thing I find most useful about this exercise is not the result. It’s the existence of the result.
Six months ago I was adding lessons by intuition. Now I have a 32-scenario suite that runs nightly and tells me, with passing-rate precision, whether my lesson system is net positive. The system can grade itself. When I add a lesson, the next holdout cycle shows whether it helps, hurts, or changes nothing on real scenarios.
That’s the loop I care about. The +3.1pp result is the artifact. The fact that I can ablate my own context system and get a number is the capability.
If you’re building an agent with a memory or lesson layer, run the ablation. Not because you’ll find a crisis — most likely you’ll find something like what I found, modest net positive with one or two pathological cases. Run it because the capability to ablate is more valuable than any single result.
